Cinco Paul serves as showrunner, and wrote all of the original music for the series. And then it ends in a very - you know, Ann does an amazing job with the song, and it ends in a really sweet spot - right? It's like, why are we learning this? It's a nice melody. STRONG: No because it wasn't like they were not emotional thoughts, you know? You want to try with other people? UNIDENTIFIED CHORUS: (As characters, chanting) Corn puddin', corn puddin', corn puddin', corn puddin'. But that's really where it deepened into something different. PAUL: You know, he's amazing, and he's so tender, and he loves cooking. It's not like I drove myself. You know, really, we talk about escapism, and I had real life escapism, where I flew into this beautiful, magical land of Vancouver, where there's, like, water and mountains and big trees - it was gorgeous - and then to be on those sets that were also gorgeous, and then to be with this amazing group of people. So you're not in the middle of New York City right now. I mean, it's real to most people, but, I mean, you saw the worst that could happen. And then I remembered, like, hearing my straight male friends talk about interactions that they'd had, like, with some girl that seems normal, and then it's like, oh, she just said something crazy, and how do I get out of this conversation? You know, I was much more protected. And, like, we're ending someone's, like, educational career right now in this moment, and you're playing a game with it. The Keegan-Michael Key character hates musicals. And that was the germ of the idea. And it is - it still feels a bit like controlled chaos, on "Update" especially, where it feels kind of fresh, and we're not exactly sure what's going to happen. And my mom made a little poster for me for my room growing up that said Cecily on Broadway. Otherwise, it's hard to get an impression on the show. GROSS: Then you have a couple episodes where you share your opinions of films of the '80s and films of the '90s. How did it affect your sense of self to be arrested and to be expelled and to think, maybe, you wouldn't even graduate high school? GROSS: And so is that one of the things you wanted to play with - also the idea that, like, love can totally transform a person into - you know, a kind of stern, rigid person into a much more loving, lovely person?
